About the event

Join award-winning poet Andrew McMillan for an intimate reading and conversation exploring the complexities of belonging, queerness and community. As part of the Belonging is a Social Construct preview event, McMillan will share selections from his acclaimed collections, including physical, playtime, and pandemonium, which delve into themes of masculinity, vulnerability and the search for connection.

Reflecting on the experiences of young queer individuals, McMillan notes:

“So often young queer people feel that they belongOUT, outside of the group, outside of the conversation, outside of expectations. The word belonging reminds us we all Belong In one mutual community of support and respect and love that is the queer community. The one we’re all in. The one we all must support.”

Through his poetry, McMillan invites us to consider how we construct and deconstruct our identities within societal frameworks, and how shared narratives can develop a sense of inclusion and understanding.
